Reclamation Releases Environmental Documents for Madera Irrigation District Water Transfers

The Bureau of Reclamation today released for public review draft environmental documents for a one-year transfer of up to 20,000 acre-feet of water from the Madera Irrigation District to two other districts, with the transfers to occur before February 28, 2012.
The Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI) addresses transfer of Madera Irrigation District (MID) Friant water supplies to the North Kern Water Storage District (NKWSD) and/or the Semitropic Water Storage District (Semitropic) for existing agricultural, or municipal and industrial purposes.
MID is seeking to maximize beneficial use of its Central Valley Project Friant Division water supplies by performing a one-year transfer of a portion of its water that exceeds current demand. Revenue from the transfer will support MID?s operations, maintenance and facility improvement programs.
NKWSD and/or Semitropic could bank the transferred water in their facilities for later recovery and use within their service areas, or the transferred water may be delivered to NKWSD?s and/or Semitropic?s internal customers in-lieu of the customers pumping groundwater.
