For Release: August 10, 2011

Reclamation announced today that on Wednesday, August 17, the La Plata County Sheriff's Office will be conducting mutual aid tactical training at Lake Nighthorse. Tactical teams from LPCSO, Durango Police Department, and San Juan County (New Mexico) Sheriff's Office, will be participating in the joint exercise. No live munitions will be used during the training.

The purpose of the training is:

  1. to improve inter-agency mutual aid capabilities;
  2. to test interoperability of communications systems and response equipment;
  3. to allow participants to become familiar with the Lake Nighthorse terrain, access, and protocols so they are better prepared to respond to any emergency at that location in the future;
  4. to enhance area law enforcement capabilities when responding to a potential homeland security or criminal activity threat.

There will be signs posted by La Plata County Sheriff's Office along County Road 210 informing the public that a law enforcement training exercise is in progress in the area.

The area in and around Lake Nighthorse remains closed to public use until a recreation management entity is identified and appropriate recreation facilities are built to provide for public safety and protect resources from damage due to uncontrolled use. Trespassers may be subject to citation by La Plata County Sheriff.

For more information, contact Mike Dombrowski with Reclamation at 970-385-6533 or Dan Bender with LPCSO at 970-382-7026.
