For Release: August 05, 2011

On Tuesday and Wednesday, August 9 and 10, 2011, the Bureau of Reclamation will temporarily decrease flows in the lower American River below Nimbus Dam from 3,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) to as low as 1,000 cfs to perform maintenance and prepare the Nimbus Fish Hatchery weir foundation for installation of the weir's super structure. Approximate working hours each day will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reclamation will increase flows at 4 p.m. on Tuesday night to 2,500 cfs and on Wednesday night after 4 p.m. back up to 3,500 cfs.

If necessary, maintenance flows could extend into Thursday, August 11. The racks are used to guide Chinook salmon into the hatchery fish ladder.

Recreationists on or along the lower American River are advised to exercise caution due to cold river temperatures and variable flow conditions.
