For Release: July 14, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation has made available for public review and comment a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) on the Butte Water District (District) Canal Automation - Thresher Weir Replacement Project. Under the Sacramento Valley Integrated Regional Water Management Plan Grants Program, Reclamation proposes to provide financial assistance to the District to replace the Thresher Weir on the District's main canal. The proposed project is a first step toward improving irrigation service and reducing water shortages by replacing the existing undersized, manually-operated structure at Thresher Weir with an enlarged weir equipped with electrically driven, remotely operated gates. The District is located in Gridley, CA, south of Oroville.

In addition to improving irrigation service, installing automated gates will improve regional water supply reliability by reducing spillage from the canal and laterals and will reduce tailwater now caused by the inability to adjust lateral flows to meet scheduled shutoffs of deliveries.

The Draft EA/FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and may be viewed online. If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.

Written comments on the Draft EA/FONSI are due by Wednesday, July 28, 2011, and should be mailed to Shelly Hatleberg, Bureau of Reclamation, 2800 Cottage Way, MP-410, Sacramento, CA 95825, or faxed to 916-978-5290, or e-mailed to shatleberg@usbr.gov. To request a copy of the documents or for additional information, please contact Ms. Hatleberg at 916-978-5050 or shatleberg@usbr.gov.
