Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916 978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: June 13, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Independence Lake Spillway Fish Barrier Project. The fish barrier is intended to eliminate the upstream migration of non-native fish that pose a risk to the lake's unique population of federally listed Lahontan cutthroat trout. Reclamation's Desert Terminal Lakes Program would provide funding for the fish barrier to The Nature Conservancy for the protection of the native fishery in the lake, as directed by Congressional legislation. Independence Lake is located in Sierra County, California.

The Draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and may be viewed online. If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 (TTY 916-978-5608) or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.
