For Release: May 27, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review and comments a Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (Draft EA/FONSI) on the addition of new flashboards to the spillway gates at Keswick Dam. These modifications would increase Keswick Reservoir's volume by about 2 percent, allowing increased operation of the Shasta Powerplant during peak revenue hours.

The proposed modifications would require up to 2 months of on-site work and would close the road across Keswick Dam during construction requiring detoured traffic around the area. The timing of construction depends on funding, and construction is not expected to begin before 2013.

The Draft EA/FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available online. If you encounter problems accessing the documents, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.

Written comments must be received by close of business Thursday, June 30, 2011, and should be sent to Buford Holt, Bureau of Reclamation, Northern California Area Office, 16349 Shasta Dam Boulevard, Shasta Lake, CA 96019. Comments may also be faxed to Mr. Holt at 530-275-2441 or e-mailed to bholt@usbr.gov.

For additional information or to request a copy of the Draft EA/FONSI, please contact Mr. Holt at 530-276-2047, TTY 800-450-6000, or e-mail bholt@usbr.gov. Copies of the draft documents may also be viewed at Reclamation's Northern California Area Office.
