Reclamation Releases Final Resource Management Plan for Belle Fourche Reservoir

The Bureau of Reclamation today announced the release to the public of the final Belle Fourche Reservoir Environmental Assessment/Resource Management Plan (EA/RMP). Reclamation's Dakotas Area Manager Dennis Breitzman said the EA/RMP describes the plan for managing the land and recreation resources of the Belle Fourche Reservoir in western South Dakota.
"The purpose of the plan is to protect and manage lands and resources associated with the reservoir consistent with its authorized purpose," Breitzman said. "It will guide the management of resources at the reservoir for many years to come."
Development of the RMP included several years of extensive public involvement. Belle Fourche EA/RMP team leader Faye Streier said the plan is a modification of the Alternative D described in the draft EA/RMP, which was circulated for public comment in December 2002.
The RMP includes a road plan that will provide improved roads, good shoreline access and vehicle parking at many locations around the reservoir. Duplicate roads and two tracks that are damaging resources will be closed to motor vehicle traffic. It provides for developed, semi-primitive, primitive, and group camping, improved sanitary facilities and day use areas. Additionally, increased services will be provided at Rocky Point.
Implementation of the selected alternative is projected to begin this year, with installation of electrical and water lines and road work as the first priorities.
