Reclamation's Four Corners Construction Office will begin conducting a spring flow release test from Lake Nighthorse Reservoir, part of the Animas-La Plata Project, to evaluate the performance of the improvements constructed in Basin Creek when water is released from Ridges Basin Dam.

The flow release test, which will begin on May 4 and continue for approximately three weeks depending on results, is part of the testing and commissioning of the Animas-La Plata Project prior to the transition to operational status. Released flows will range from 5 to 200 cubic-feet-per-second and the total release of water from the reservoir will not exceed 5,000 acre-feet. During this initial evaluation stage, all flows released from the reservoir will pass through fish nets that ensure no escapement of live fish or eggs to the Animas River that would negatively impact the endangered fish in the San Juan River.

The Basin Creek Improvements consist of a series of channel improvements and small check dams, or drop structures, and were constructed as part of the Animas-La Plata Project. The purpose of the improvements is to convey water released from Ridges Basin Dam down Basin Creek to the Animas River without increasing, or decreasing, the sediment transport to the river.
