The Bureau of Reclamation will temporarily close the North Fishing Pier at Haystack Reservoir while construction crews improve accessibility and safety at the popular vacation spot located about 10 miles south of Madras, Oregon.

The pier will be temporarily closed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 4-5; May 9-12; and May 16-19. Crews will not be working Friday through Sunday during those dates.

The improvements include installing safety railings, accessible pathways, and repairs to the parking lot.

"After improvements are complete, the area will be more safe and accessible to persons with disabilities," said Kathy Cushman, Reclamation Land & Water Specialist. "We are trying to minimize disruptions in fishing activities, but we have to close some areas for public safety concerns while construction is taking place."

Signs advising the public of the temporary closures will be posted at the entrance and on site during the May 4-May 19 construction effort.

The reservoir is impounded by Haystack Dam which was constructed by Reclamation in 1957, and is operated by the North Unit Irrigation District which supplies irrigation water to the area.
