The Bureau of Reclamation is working closely with the Boise Project Board of Control (BPBOC) as they install a 2 foot thick clay liner on a section of the New York Canal floor near South Federal Way. Water in the canal has been temporarily stopped to allow placement of the material.

Water managers anticipate the repairs will take approximately five to seven days and soon thereafter will restore flows for the 2011 irrigation season. Meanwhile, regular monitoring of the area will continue throughout the irrigation season.

"We will do an analysis at the end of the irrigation season to fully evaluate the effectives of the repairs," said Jerrold Gregg, Snake River Area Manager.

Flows in the Boise River are currently just below flood stage at the Glenwood Bridge gauging station and it is believed that flood control operations can accommodate the projected one-week period for the repairs to the New York Canal.

The New York Canal is about 40 miles long and serves five districts which comprise the BPBOC, a feature of Reclamation's Boise Project.
