For Release: April 21, 2011

Join the Bureau of Reclamation's staff at New Melones Lake as they celebrate the third annual Customer Appreciation Day. To show appreciation, the $8 day use fee will be waived for all visitors on Saturday, April 23. New Melones Lake is managed by Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Region Central California Area Office and is located approximately 60 miles east of Stockton, California.

This is another example of the Department of Interior's "America's Great Outdoors" initiative, designed to create a 21st-century conservation ethic and reconnect Americans with our natural, cultural, and historic heritage. Federal agencies, including Reclamation, are working to ensure more Americans have access to safe and clean parks and open spaces close to their homes.

Reclamation staff will lead a hike to the New Melones Dam Overlook to experience an up-close view of the dam and river canyon. A ranger will discuss the history of the dam and the past, present and future of the Stanislaus River. This is a moderate to strenuous 3-mile hike. Participants will meet at the Peoria Equestrian Staging Area off of Peoria Flat Road at 10 a.m.

Directions to the Peoria Equestrian Staging Area:

To get to the meeting area, take State Highway 49 south out of Jamestown and travel approximately 6 miles to the stoplight. Turn right on O'Byrnes Ferry Road, and turn right on Peoria Flat Road. Follow Peoria Flat Road to the Cal-Fire Baseline Conservation Camp and turn left into the parking lot.

For more information, stop by the New Melones Lake Administration Office or call 209-536-9094, extension 0. The administration office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You may also check the website at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/newmelones/.
