Reclamation Announces Negotiations with SMUD for Long-Term Water Service Contract Renewal

The Bureau of Reclamation will negotiate with the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) on contract terms and conditions for renewal of their existing long-term water service contract from within the American River Division of the Central Valley Project.

The existing contract, executed in 1970, provides for the diversion of municipal and industrial water from Central Valley Project facilities of the American River. Renewal of this contract is being conducted consistent with Section 3404 of Title 34 of Public Law 102-575, dated October 30, 1992.

This renewal contract will be updated to reflect existing law and policy governing Reclamation water service contracts. The goal of the negotiations is to arrive at a mutually agreeable long-term contract. The first negotiation session will be held:
