Reclamation Increases Releases from Shasta Dam to the Sacramento River

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: March 21, 2011

For flood control management, the Bureau of Reclamation will increase Shasta Dam releases at noon by 10,000 cubic feet per second, bringing the total releases from the dam to 50,000 cfs into the Sacramento River.  The increased releases are necessary to meet flood space regulatory requirements within the reservoir and will remain at that rate until further notice. Shasta Dam is located about 12 miles north of Redding.

Folsom Dam on the American River will continue releases at 25,000 cfs until further notice. Folsom Dam is located about 25 miles east of Sacramento.

People recreating in or along the Sacramento or American rivers should take appropriate safety precautions during periods of high river flows.  Please note that in Sacramento some sections of the bike trail along the American River and parts of Discovery Park may become inundated as flows increase.

Additional Information on Dam Releases

Daily information on expected flows in California rivers can be found on the California Data Exchange Center website or on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers website.  For information on Reclamation facilities, please visit the Central Valley Operation Office website.
