The 44th annual Colorado High School Bridge Building competition will be held at the Bureau of Reclamation Laboratory in Denver on February 26.

Approximately 75-100 students from throughout Colorado will test their engineering knowledge by building their own small-scale structures made only out of basswood and common adhesive. The model bridge that can hold the most weight in contrast to its size is declared the winner.

The competition introduces high school students to futures in engineering and the sciences. Reclamation hosts the competition as part of its ongoing efforts to engage youth and encourage future engineers.

The top winners in the competition will qualify for the International Contest held in Chicago.

Located in Building 56 in the Denver Federal Center, the competition will begin at 8:00 AM. In addition to the competition, tours of Reclamation's hydraulic and materials laboratories will be given.

After the competition has finished, Reclamation will demonstrate its 5-million pound press by crushing a large concrete cylinder.

The competition is a collaboration between the Professional Engineers of Colorado, the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado, and the Bureau of Reclamation.

This is part of Reclamation's participation in Secretary of the Interior's Youth Initiative. Reclamation has an ongoing emphasis to educate and engage youth across all areas of our operations.
