For Release: February 04, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation, in partnership with Berryessa Trails and Conservation and the Audubon California Landowner Stewardship Program, is seeking volunteers to work on a habitat restoration project near the Pope Creek Bridge on the northwest side of Lake Berryessa, located in Napa County, Calif. This project continues Reclamation's commitment to implementing the 2006 Record of Decision for the Lake Berryessa Visitor Services Plan to foster and develop partnerships with local entities and to preserve and protect natural resources in and around the lake.

The enhancement project will involve planting more than 100 native trees, shrubs and grasses in the area which is currently dominated by non-native and invasive vegetation. The goal of the project is to reestablish native vegetation and improve wildlife habitat.

The project is being funded through a California Coastal Conservancy Grant obtained by Berryessa Trails and Conservation. The Audubon California Landowner Stewardship Program has developed the plan and will be implementing the initial phase of the project along with Berryessa Trails and Conservation, with whom Reclamation has a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on trail and restoration planning and implementation.

Volunteers are being recruited to assist with preparation of the site and planting. The first volunteer workday will be Saturday, February 12, 2011. An additional 2-3 workdays will follow over the next several months.

For further information or to volunteer for the project, please contact Lake Berryessa Outdoor Recreation Planner Jason Jordan at 707-966-2111 extension 143 or e-mail jgjordan@usbr.gov or Carol Kunze, Berryessa Trails and Conservation, at carol@berryessatrails.org.
