For Release: September 28, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation has released a Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact regarding execution of a 5-year Warren Act contract with Madera Irrigation District for storage of non-federal water within federal facilities.

The Warren Act authorizes Reclamation to negotiate agreements to store and convey non-federal water when excess capacity is available in federal facilities.

Up to 36,000 acre-feet of Madera Irrigation District (MID) non-federal water would be stored behind Hidden Dam in Hensley Lake of the Hidden Unit of the Central Valley Project from 2010 through February 2015.  The storage within Madera County would provide MID with greater water management flexibility.

The Draft Environmental Assessment and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI) were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available online.  If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.

Written comments must be received by close of business Monday, October 18, 2010.  They also can be e-mailed to Michael Inthavong, Bureau of Reclamation, South-Central California Area Office, 1243 N Street, Fresno, CA 93721.  Comments may also be faxed to Mr. Inthavong at 559-487-5194 or e-mailed to minthavong@usbr.gov.
