For Release: September 24, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office announced today that it has released the final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the proposed City of Yuma (City) 12th Street connector project.

The purpose of this project is to improve the area's traffic flow, relieve current congestion, and improve emergency service access by providing a new minor arterial roadway connector to 12th Street between Avenues A and B. Currently, 12th Street does not extend between Avenues A and B because no bridge crosses the East Main Canal.

As described in the draft EA - to facilitate proposed construction of the connector, Reclamation is considering the issuance of a Right-of-Use authorization to the City, to cross land held in fee or as right-of-way (the East Main Canal).

The EA describes anticipated environmental impacts resulting from the proposed action. Based upon analysis completed for the EA, Reclamation has made a preliminary determination that issuance of an authorization to the City will not result in significant impacts. As such Reclamation has determined that a FONSI is appropriate and that an environmental impact statement does not need to be prepared. Copies of the final EA and FONSI are available online at: http://www.usbr.gov/lc/yuma/environmental_docs/environ_docs.html.

Any questions regarding this action should be addressed to Mr. Julian DeSantiago, Environmental Protection Specialist, Bureau of Reclamation, 7301 Calle Agua Salada, Yuma, AZ 85364. You may also contact Mr. DeSantiago by e-mail, at: jdesantiago@usbr.gov.
