For Release: August 30, 2010

The Wyoming Area Office of the Bureau of Reclamation in Mills, Wyo., will be lowering the water level in Guernsey Reservoir as the 2010 irrigation season draws to a close, according to John H. Lawson, Wyoming Area Manager.

Beginning September 7, 2010, the release of water from Glendo Reservoir will be decreased from approximately 6,300 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 4,000 cfs by September 8 to lower the water elevation in Guernsey Reservoir. Releases from Glendo Reservoir are anticipated to be reduced to 25 cfs during the week of September 27.

Guernsey Reservoir is expected to remain accessible for boating recreation through the weekend of September 4-6. Reclamation will begin drawing down Guernsey Reservoir on Tuesday, September 7. To avoid potential problems associated with declining reservoir levels, Reclamation advises that watercraft be removed from the reservoir by the evening of Monday, September 6. On September 7, the reservoir will begin to decline as the irrigation season draws to a close. The reservoir will not be suitable for boating recreation until next year.

Due to high inflow conditions experienced this year, the Glendo reservoir level at the end of September will be higher than previous years at an elevation of 4605 feet (240,000 acre-feet). Glendo Reservoir levels will then stabilize and slowly increase during the winter.

Boaters, recreationists, and irrigators should take proper precautions regarding changing river flows between Glendo and Guernsey Reservoirs and the lowering of Guernsey Reservoir.
