For Release: August 14, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking public comment on the environmental effects of continuing the Walker River Basin Cloud Seeding Project, which is intended to provide additional water to Walker Lake, an at-risk natural desert terminal lake at the terminus of the Walker River in Nevada.

Preparation of an Environmental Assessment is part of the process required to approve a grant of more than $1.3 million to the Desert Research Institute to operate the longtime Walker River Basin Cloud Seeding Project.  The grant would allow the project to continue cloud seeding for five winters.

Activities would occur in Mono and Tuolumne counties in California and Lyon, Douglas and Mineral counties in Nevada.  The project uses six ground-based seeding generators and supplemental airborne cloud seeding.

Reclamation is conducting a public scoping process to help identify any potential issues, concerns or alternatives that should be addressed in the Environmental Assessment on the proposal.

Written comments, which must be received by close of business Friday, August 27, 2010, should be mailed to Jane Schmidt, Bureau of Reclamation, Lahontan Basin Area Office, 705 North Plaza, Room 320, Carson City, Nev. (NV), 89701, e-mailed to jcschmidt@usbr.gov, or faxed to 775-882-7592. For more information, please call Ms. Schmidt at 775-884-8372.
