Reclamation Releases Environmental Documents for Review on Proposed City of Yuma 12th Street Connector

Media Contact: June Wolfe, (928) 343-8169, jwolfe@usbr.gov

For Release: July 29, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office has issued for public review and comment a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the proposed 12th Street - Avenue A to Avenue B connector project. The project area is located within the Yuma City limits.

The Proposed Action would improve the area's traffic flow, relieve current congestion, and improve emergency service access by providing a new minor arterial roadway connection to 12th Street between Avenues A and B. Currently, 12th Street does not extend between Avenue A and Avenue B because no bridge crosses the East Main Canal.

To facilitate proposed construction of the connector, Reclamation is considering the issuance of a Right-of-Use authorization to the City, to cross land held in fee or as right-of-way (the East Main Canal).

The draft EA describes anticipated environmental impacts resulting from the proposed action. Based upon analysis completed for the EA, Reclamation has made a preliminary determination that issuance of an authorization to the City will not result in significant impacts. As such Reclamation has determined that a FONSI is appropriate and that an environmental impact statement does not need to be prepared. Copies of the draft EA and draft FONSI are available for public review online at: http://www.usbr.gov/lc/yuma/environmental_docs/environ_docs.html.

Comments on these documents will be accepted until August 30, 2010. Comments should be mailed to Mr. Julian DeSantiago, Environmental Protection Specialist, Bureau of Reclamation, 7301 Calle Agua Salada, Yuma, AZ 85364. They can also be submitted by e-mail at jdesantiago@usbr.gov.
