For Release: June 22, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation has issued the Record of Decision (ROD) for the New Melones Lake Area Resource Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (RMP/EIS).  Located in Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties, New Melones Lake is managed by the Central California Area Office (CCAO), part of Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Region.

Reclamation selected Alternative D (Multiple Use), the preferred alternative.  This decision is based on interdisciplinary team recommendations, environmental analysis, and information received from the public.  Reclamation determined that Alternative D will best balance the management of recreation and the natural and cultural resources of the New Melones Lake Area.

Mike Finnegan, CCAO Area Manager, stated, "The ROD is an important milestone.  The process relied heavily on information received through public meetings, comments, and visitor use surveys.  The decision enhances Reclamation's ability to manage the lake's natural and cultural resources while providing for future recreational opportunities."

The Final RMP/EIS, issued on February 5, 2010, evaluated resource conditions and analyzed alternative management actions that provide for public health and safety, recreational and land use, traffic and transportation, and cultural and biological resources, including sensitive species.

The ROD was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and is available online.  If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov or call 916-978-5100 (TTY 916-978-5608) or questions or to request copies of the ROD, please contact Melissa Brockman Vignau, Project Manager, at e-mail mbrockman@usbr.gov or 916-989-7182 (TTY 916-989-7285).  Additional information is available on the project website.
