For Release: June 09, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation will begin conducting a geotechnical exploration at Hyrum Dam beginning on June 9, 2010. Reclamation drill crews and geologists will use the exploration to collect soil and bedrock data for possible future modifications to the dam and spillway.

The work is expected to last approximately 10 days and will require the closure of one lane of traffic along the crest of the dam, which is also 300 South - Mount Sterling Road. Temporary traffic lights will be used to reroute traffic during the closure period.

Hyrum Dam and Reservoir are located on the Little Bear River near the southwest corner of Hyrum City approximately 10 miles from Logan, Utah. Built between 1934 and 1935, the dam is a compacted earth and rockfill structure with a structural height of 116 feet, a crest width of 35 feet, a crest length of 540 feet at elevation of 4,680 feet. The reservoir has a surface area of 480 acres and a total capacity of 18,685 acre-feet.
