For Release: May 12, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation today released documents for public review regarding redirection of damaging floodwater from the Kings, St. John's, and Tule rivers into the Friant-Kern Canal, a Central Valley Project facility.

Reclamation released a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for a 2010 Warren Act Contract and License with the Delta Lands Reclamation District 770 (District).  The District is seeking Reclamation's approval of a 12-month (June 1, 2010, through May 31, 2011) contract and license.

The District needs the Warren Act Contract to protect agricultural lands and public improvements in the Tulare Lakebed from floodwater.  The proposed license is necessary to store, operate, and maintain pumping facilities on Federal land managed by Reclamation along the Friant-Kern Canal.  The license will allow existing infrastructure to remain in place, allow insertion of pumps, and provide for equipment maintenance.

The Draft EA/FONSI, prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, are available online  If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.
