Statement by Commissioner John Keys on Safety of Dams Act of 2004

Media Contact: Trudy Harlow, (202) 513-0574, tharlow@usbr.gov

For Release: December 03, 2004

The Safety of Dams Act of 2004, signed today by President Bush, provides Reclamation with the authority to fast-track actions to ensure the structural integrity of its dams. It also invites project beneficiaries, water districts, and others to participate in the process of crafting solutions so the best ideas can be brought forward while minimizing impacts to project users. Finally, $541 million has been added to the ceiling over the next decade.

I want to thank Senators Pete Domenici and Gordon Smith, as well as Representatives Richard Pombo, Ken Calvert and Grace Napolitano, for their support of this important legislation. With their interest and commitment, Reclamation can continue to ensure the safety of its dams while meeting the needs of our contractors, regional economies, and the general public for many years to come.
