On Wednesday, March 31, the Bureau of Reclamation will begin increasing releases from New Melones Dam to the Stanislaus River from 200 to 1,350 cubic feet per second.  The higher releases will fluctuate until about May 31 to help meet fishery improvement measures.  New Melones Dam and Reservoir are features of Reclamation's Central Valley Project and are located in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Jamestown, California.

Recreationists in or along the Stanislaus River downstream to the confluence of the San Joaquin and Stanislaus Rivers should take appropriate safety precautions between the March 31 and May 31 dates.

These releases are part of Reclamation's continued effort to improve fishery habitat in the Stanislaus and other rivers that feed into the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system.  Higher flows improve fish habitat conditions and encourage juvenile steelhead to begin their migration to the ocean.  Reclamation will monitor flow conditions and adjust the releases as necessary to meet the fishery objectives.

Daily information on expected flows in the Stanislaus River can be found on the California Data Exchange Center website or from the Army Corps of Engineers website.  For more information on the Stanislaus River, visit Reclamation's Central Valley Operation Office website.
