For Release: March 01, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review the Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI) for a 3-year groundwater pilot project (Project).

Reclamation proposes to use American Recovery Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to install two groundwater production wells at the Volta Wildlife Area (VWA) in Merced County, California, that will produce up to 5,000 acre-feet of groundwater per year from the Project.  The Project will develop a groundwater supply along the Volta Wasteway that can be used to diversify refuge water supply sources and supplement water supplies for critical spring and summer nesting habitat; improve water supply reliability for Central Valley Project contractors, VWA, and the Grassland Resource Conservation District; and to confirm that the water quality is suitable for refuge use. Reclamation staff will analyze water quality through a monitoring plan.

The Draft EA/FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available online.  If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please call 916-978-5102 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.
