For Release: February 05, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation has released the Final New Melones Lake Area Resource Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (RMP/EIS). Located in Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties, New Melones Lake is managed by the Central California Area Office (CCAO), part of Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Region.

The Final RMP/EIS evaluates the current and future resource conditions at the New Melones Lake Area and analyzes alternative management actions that provide for public health and safety, recreational and land use, traffic and transportation, cultural and archaeological resources, and sensitive species and habitats. Reclamation will select an alternative that will be used to guide the management of the lake's natural, cultural, and recreational resources.

Michael Finnegan, Area Manager, noted, "The completion of this important environmental review process is a key milestone for guiding the future management of New Melones Lake's diverse resources."

The Final RMP/EIS was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=2536. If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please e-mail mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov or call 916-978-5100 (TTY 916-978-5608).

For questions or to request copies of the Final RMP/EIS, please contact Ms. Melissa Brockman-Vignau, Project Manager, Bureau of Reclamation, Central California Area Office, at e-mail mbrockman@usbr.gov or 916-989-7182 (TTY 916-989-7285).  Additional information is available on the project website at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/newmelones/rmp.html.

Following the 30-day notice of the publication for the Final RMP/EIS, Reclamation will prepare a Record of Decision (ROD). The ROD will identify the decision and discuss relevant factors considered.
