Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, 01/26/2010 00:29

For Release: January 26, 2010

The Bureau of Reclamation announces the availability for public review and comment of the Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI) for the proposed Pond-Poso Spreading and Recovery Facility Project at Semitropic Water Storage District.

Spreading ponds are typically small basins that are used for artificial water recharge. The practice consists of recharging surplus runoff, imported surface water, or recycled wastewater into groundwater aquifers. When there is a call for more water from the aquifers, the district would pump the water to the surface.

Previously, Semitropic had begun work on a recovery facility but did not have funds to complete the project.  When the project is completed, the facilities will provide for recharge and recovery of about 66,000 acre-feet per year. Construction is slated to begin in March 2010 and be completed by September 2010.

The Draft EA and Draft FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=4919.    If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail mpPublicAffairs@usbr.gov.

The project was funded through the Challenge Grant Program's Water Marketing and Efficiency Grants effort by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  It was selected through a competitive process based on the ability to improve sustainable water supplies in the western United States.  The project met specific program requirements, and Reclamation will provide up to 50 percent cost share funding.  Additional program information may be found at http://www.doi.gov//archive/news/09_News_Releases/082009b.html
