Reclamation Solicits Public Comments on Proposed Ditch Rider Houses Demolition and Removal, Churchill County, Nevada

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: October 07, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation will prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) on the proposed demolition and removal of five ditch rider houses and associated structures, and disposal of these properties.  The EA will analyze the demolition and removal impacts of the Island District house, the Old River District house, the Sheckler District house, the Stillwater District house, and the South East Street residence.  All are located near the town of Fallon in Churchill County, Nevada.  The property will be sold or relinquished to the Bureau of Land Management.

Reclamation built the ditch rider houses to provide housing for the irrigation facilities operators and the houses are still under Reclamation ownership.  They are no longer needed, and pose a human health and safety hazard.

Reclamation is requesting public comments on the proposed Ditch Rider Houses Demolition and Removal Project to help identify potential environmental issues and concerns.  Public participation will continue as the environmental process proceeds.

Written comments must be received by close of business on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, and should be mailed to Ms. Andrea Minor, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza Street, Room 320, Carson City, NV 89701-4015, faxed to 775-882-7592, or e-mailed to aminor@usbr.gov.  For more information, please call Ms. Minor at 775-884-8366 (TDD 775-882-3236).
