MEDIA ADVISORY: Media Briefing Scheduled on Interim Flows for the San Joaquin River Restoration Program

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: October 01, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation will begin making additional water releases, called Interim Flows, from Friant Dam into the San Joaquin River on Thursday, October 1, 2009, in support of the San Joaquin River Restoration Program (SJRRP).  (See Reclamation/California Department of Water Resources Press Release MP-09-133, October 1, 2009.)

These experimental flows will provide valuable information regarding flows, temperatures, fish needs, seepage losses, shallow groundwater conditions, recirculation, recapture and reuse conditions, channel capacity (high and low flows), and levee stability.  This information will be used in designing the major improvements needed in the river and informing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Game, and the National Marine Fisheries Service as they craft a salmon reintroduction plan.

Mr. Michael Jackson, Area Manager, South-Central California Area Office, Reclamation
