For Release: September 29, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation announces that on Monday, October 5, 2009, geologic investigations are scheduled to begin on top of Stampede Dam and Dike in support of the Corrective Action Study (CAS) for the Safety of Dams Program. Stampede Dam is located about 14 miles northeast of Truckee, California, on the Little Truckee River, and is approximately 8 miles upstream from the confluence with the Truckee River.

The geologic investigations are expected to take place from Monday, October 5 through Friday, October 9, 2009. The road crossing Stampede Dam is locally known as a segment of the Dog Valley Road, State Route 261. Safety measures will require closing the road crossing Stampede Dam to the general public; emergency vehicles will be permitted to use one lane to cross the dam at any time.

The U.S. Tahoe National Forest campground facilities and the Captain Roberts boat ramp at Stampede Reservoir will remain open. Access to the campground will be from the west entrance near the boat ramp. The public is advised to use the alternate route from Hwy 89 N. to County Rd. 886 Hobart Mills, then east on Dog Valley Rd. through Russel Valley to reach Stampede Reservoir.

Reclamation will post signs to notify the public of the temporary closures, and will use traffic devices to close access to the road crossing Stampede Dam on both sides of the dam. It is important for the public to be aware of and obey traffic control instructions and signs posted for their own safety.

The Stampede Dam CAS will identify and develop alternatives to reduce the risk potential for overtopping Stampede Dam due to major flood events.

For further information on the temporary road closure, please contact Reclamation's Mid-Pacific Region Public Affairs Office at 916-978-5100 (TDD 916-978-5608), or e-mail mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov.
