For Release: September 25, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation will be conducting a geotechnical exploration program at Hyrum Dam beginning in late September 2009. Reclamation drill crews and geologists will use the exploration program to collect soil and bedrock data for possible future modifications to the spillway. The exploration work will have no effect on the water supply or recreation on the reservoir. The work may take up to three months to complete.

Hyrum Dam is the key feature of the Hyrum Project, which provides supplemental water to 6,800 acres of land in Northern Utah. The dam is located on the Little Bear River near Hyrum City, approximately 10 miles from Logan, Utah.

Built between 1934 and 1935, the dam is a compacted earth and rockfill structure with a structural height of 116 feet, a crest width of 35 feet, a crest length of 540 feet at elevation of 4,680 feet. The reservoir has a surface area of 480 acres and a total capacity of 18,685 acre-feet.
