For Release: September 23, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation's Central California Area Office, in partnership with Berryessa Trails and Conservation (BT&C), is sponsoring a volunteer event at Lake Berryessa on National Public Lands Day (NPLD), Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  The event will target multiple sites around the northwest area of the lake to cut and remove invasive plant species.  Lake Berryessa is located 30 miles northeast of Napa and 8 miles from Winters, California.

Each year, Americans are asked to participate in NPLD on the last Saturday in September to help clean up the sites they enjoy for recreation.  NPLD is the Nation's largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands.  An estimated 130,000 volunteers will grab shovels and gloves at more than 2,000 sites across the Nation.

Volunteers are asked to pre-register for the event by contacting Ms. Carol Kunze, BT&C, at 707-966-5211 or e-mail carol@berryessatrails.org; or Mr. Jason Jordan, Reclamation, at 707-966-2111, extension 143, or e-mail jgjordan@usbr.gov.  Volunteers will be assigned work locations.  Following the event, lunch will be provided by Berryessa Trails at the Oak Shores Day Use Area.

Volunteers should dress for high temperatures, bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and bring work gloves loppers, and small hand saws, if possible.  Carpooling is recommended as parking is limited at the sites.
