For Release: September 11, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation announces that beginning on Saturday, September 12, 2009, the Oak Shores Area at Lake Berryessa will be temporarily closed to water access. The closure will affect the public campground and day-use areas of Oak Shores and will remain in effect until an evaluation of reservoir elevations and other conditions can be completed. The evaluation is a precautionary measure in light of recent drownings near the facility and is necessary out of concern for public safety.

Swimming from boats and kayaks and from other accessible areas around the lake is permitted, however, the public is advised to wear life jackets for their safety while in the water. Signs will be posted at Oak Shores warning visitors about the closure.

While there are no lifeguards posted at Lake Berryessa, and swimming is at one's own risk, Reclamation operates a free life jacket loaner program at the water education center located within Oak Shores.
