Reclamation is continuing the Corrective Action Study (CAS) on Stampede Dam by performing ongoing dam safety evaluations. The CAS will identify alternatives to reduce the risk potential for overtopping Stampede Dam due to major flood events. Stampede Dam is located about 14 miles northeast of Truckee, California, on the Little Truckee River, and is approximately 8 miles upstream from the confluence with the Truckee River.

Reclamation's investigation since 2004 shows that Stampede Dam does not meet Reclamation's guidelines for achieving public protection in dam safety decision making, which creates the need to pursue risk reduction measures for people living downstream.

As part of the CAS, Reclamation is planning to collect geologic information on top of this zoned earthfill structure, and temporary closures of Stampede Dam road will be necessary. Once the closure dates and durations have been determined, Reclamation will notify the public.

Completed in 1969, Stampede Dam is 239 feet high, and has a crest length of 1,511 feet. The reservoir provides water primarily for fishery enhancement along the Truckee River and Pyramid Lake Fishway facilities operation. The dam is owned and operated by Reclamation and is part of the Washoe Project.
