For Release: August 14, 2009

On Monday, August 17, 2009, the Bureau of Reclamation will shut down the Nimbus Dam Powerplant to perform annual inspection and maintenance of the facility. During the initial phase of the work, 3,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) will be released through the Nimbus Dam spillway gates into the Lower American River to maintain river flows. This water would typically be released downstream through the powerplant for power production. Releases through the spillway gates will be visible to the public.

Maintenance will be performed beginning on Tuesday, August 18, at about 5 a.m. and continue through Thursday, August 20, until about 8 p.m., Work will alternate between the two turbines. Each turbine releases approximately 2,500 cfs. To avoid adverse effect on water deliveries 2,500 cfs will pass through the turbine and 500 cfs will be made through the Nimbus Dam spillway gates totaling 3,000 cfs flowing into the Lower American River.
