Chandler Canal Repair Complete, Reclamation Resumes Water Deliveries

Due to swift repairs to the Chandler Canal, the Bureau of Reclamation resumed water deliveries to Kennewick Irrigation District at 2:30 p.m. (PDT) today. The canal will reach full delivery capacity by 10:00 p.m. this evening, according to Walt Larrick, acting manager for Reclamations Yakima Field Office.
Reclamation maintenance crews have worked steadily since 6:00 a.m. to excavate and repair the leaking Chandler Canal.
On Wednesday morning, Reclamation employees discovered a collapse of the canal road along the Chandler Canal one mile upstream of the Chandler Pumping Plant in Prosser, Wash. The leakage from the canal created a void around the canals concrete liner and a depression across the canal road. Reclamation immediately began de-watering the canal to perform inspections. Engineers located a crack in the canal lining that caused the leak. The void and depression were examined and geologists determined that the canal foundation was sound.
Crews have placed and compacted new soil in the void around the canals foundation and access road.
A patch was applied to the crack in the canal lining making it operational.
Water deliveries to KID will resume this afternoon but irrigation customers downstream should check with KID on anticipated water delivery schedule depending on their delivery location.
