Reclamation Releases Draft EA/FONSI for Delta Cross Channel Right-of-way Transtower Lease Renewal

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: July 30, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation has released a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Draft Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the proposed renewal of a lease of Reclamation-owned property along the Delta Cross Channel near Walnut Grove, California, to Transtower, Inc. The proposed term of the lease is 10 years initially, with four successive extension opportunities, through June 30, 2060 (a total of 50 years).

Under the current lease, due to expire in June 2010, a transmission tower and appurtenant structures were constructed on the property and are currently used by three television stations which broadcast throughout Sacramento County. The tower serves as a central component of the Emergency Broadcasting System for the Central Valley of California and is a vital mechanism in assuring continued communication during times of disaster. It is also used by the County of Sacramento Sheriffs Department and several radio and cellular communication providers. Renewing the lease would allow continued, uninterrupted transmission by these entities. The Draft EA and Draft FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available for public review and comment.
