The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $1.2 million construction contract for the design and construction of a new Umatilla Field Office building located about 3 miles northeast of Hermiston, Ore.

Fowler General Construction of Richland, Wash., was awarded the contract on July 7. A new single story 6,000 square-foot building will replace a group of pre-fabricated structures.

"Updating this Reclamation office is long overdue," said Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor. "The new building will provide an efficient and safe work environment for employees who work directly with stakeholders and the public in this part of the Pacific Northwest Region."

The building will include energy-efficient features that are designed to meet Energy Star targets for new construction. The new building will also provide the office's 16 employees with a secure environment for the operations center for the Umatilla Project. The building will also house the Lands, GIS, Natural Resources, Engineering, Operations & Maintenance, and Administrative functions of the Project.

Umatilla Project stores water from the Umatilla River and McKay Creek to irrigate about 30,000 acres. The Umatilla Field Office is managed by the Columbia-Cascades Area Office based in Yakima, Wash.

Work on the new building is expected to be completed by the summer of 2010.
