Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner John W. Keys III has announced that Great Plains Regional Director Maryanne Bach has been named as Director of Research and Development. She will assume her new duties in mid-December.

"Maryanne brings a wealth of experience and a valuable perspective to the position," said Commissioner Keys. "She accomplished much during her tenure in Great Plains, particularly working to reinforce the region's relationships with our water and power customers."

Reclamation's Research Program focuses on applying scientific and technological advances to address the water management challenges that Reclamation faces.

Since 1998, Bach has served as the Director of the Great Plains Region in Billings, Mont. This region consists of all of the states of Kansas, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Oklahoma and most of the states of Colorado, Montana, Texas, and Wyoming. She was responsible for all program activities within the Region.

From 1996 to 1998 Bach served as the Assistant Director for Policy in Reclamation's Program Analysis Office in Denver. From 1994 to 1996, Bach served as the Assistant Regional Director for the Great Plains Region.

Prior to joining Reclamation in 1992, Bach served in the Department of the Interior as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Director of Program Analysis, and Special Assistant to the Secretary for Policy. She also served a 15-month appointment as Assistant Director in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Bach began her Federal career in the legislative branch, serving eight years as a staff member on the Committee for Science, Space and Technology within the U.S. House of Representatives. The Committee has jurisdiction over civilian Federal research and development.

Bach received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Providence College in Rhode Island and a Master of Science degree in Botany and Plant Ecology from Iowa State University.
