For Release: June 01, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation announces that on Monday, June 15, 2009, blasting is scheduled to begin to excavate rock in support of the Joint Federal Project's (JFP) auxiliary spillway, being constructed by Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Folsom Reservoir. Because the recently completed Folsom Lake Crossing was constructed immediately adjacent to the site of the new spillway, it will be necessary to temporarily close the bridge during blasting to ensure public safety.

Blasting is expected to take place at the same time every Monday through Friday throughout the summer, with completion in fall 2009. Blasting is not currently scheduled for the weekends. Public safety measures will be required during the blasting, necessitating closure of the bridge for up to 1 hour at the same time each day in the early afternoon. Additional information will be provided when specific closure times are determined.

The contractor, Martin Brothers Construction, will post signs to notify the public of the temporary closures, and they will use vehicles and other traffic devices to block the entrance lanes to the bridge at East Natoma Street and Folsom Auburn Road during blasting. Folsom Lake Crossing will also be closed to pedestrians and bicyclists approximately 30 minutes prior to blasting each day to ensure they have sufficient time to pass safely from the blast safety zone. It is important for the public to be aware of and obey contractor instructions and posted signs for their own safety.

Reclamation has coordinated the blasting activities and temporary bridge closures with the city of Folsom in an effort to ensure the least possible disruption to traffic during critical blasting activities. The safety of the public is of utmost importance, and all necessary measures will be taken.

The JFP will include an auxiliary spillway consisting of a 1,000-foot-long approach channel from Folsom Reservoir, a concrete control structure with six submerged gates, a 2,700-foot-long concrete-lined spillway chute, and a stilling basin. When completed in 2015, the new control structure and spillway will provide Reclamation with improved hydrologic control of storm-induced floods, increasing the safety of the public downstream of Folsom Dam and Reservoir.

Information on the temporary closures will be available on the city of Folsom website at http://www.folsom.ca.us/ and the Mid-Pacific Region website at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/. Additional information on the JFP is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/jfp/index.html.
