The Bureau of Reclamation announces the availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzing the impacts of transferring the Carson Lake and Pasture area to the State of Nevada. As directed in Public Law 101-618, the purpose of the transfer is to convey the land to the State of Nevada for management as a wildlife area.

The Carson Lake and Pasture contains approximately 30,000 acres of pasture and wetlands, located 8 miles southeast of Fallon, Nevada. It is Reclamation withdrawn land managed under agreements with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District for wildlife habitat, public use, and grazing. It is recognized as an important area for wildlife, especially shorebirds and waterfowl, and is designated as a component of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.

The Draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Reclamation is currently identifying historic properties in the transfer area and will complete compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The document is available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=3855.
