For Release: May 21, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation will begin the summer tour schedule at Shasta Dam on Saturday, May 23, 2009. Daily tour times are 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m., and 3 p.m. These free and informative tours through the Nation's second-largest concrete dam are a "must-see" for visitors planning to be in the area.

The guided tour starts on the dam at the second elevator tower just a short walk from the Visitor Center. The route will take tourists down the visitor elevator, through the dam, out to the spillway area at the base of the dam, and inside the powerplant.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before the tour time and check in at the Shasta Dam Visitor Center to receive free tickets for the tour. There is a maximum of 40 people allowed on each tour, so check in early to get your tickets. No bags, backpacks, electronic devices (including cameras and cell phones), or any weapons (including small pocket knives) are allowed on the tour. Ample parking is available. Tours last approximately 1 hour.

The Visitor Center is open year-round, 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A video version of the tour is available in the auditorium, along with displays and exhibits explaining the dam's construction history.

Shasta Dam is located approximately 10 miles north of Redding, California. Exit at Shasta Dam Boulevard (exit 685) off Interstate 5 and drive west 6 miles to the dam.
