For Release: May 18, 2009

Reclamation, with its partner agencies the San Benito County Water District (SBCWD) and the California Department of Fish & Game (DFG), propose to eradicate Zebra mussels at San Justo Reservoir in San Benito County as early as Fall 2009. A public meeting will be held to provide information on the proposed project and to offer the public an opportunity to comment. The meeting will be held:

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 6-9 p.m. San Benito County Administration Building 481 4th Street Hollister, CA 95023

The project proposes to draw down the reservoir water level through normal water deliveries, to treat the remaining water with an infusion of potash, and to treat the water distribution system with a solution of potash and chlorine. Zebra mussel mortality will be monitored during the infusion and treatment period and any adjustments in the dosing or exposure period will be made as needed. Any Zebra mussels above the waterline when the reservoir is lowered will be eradicated by exposure to air, sunshine and by direct application of potash solution. (Potash is a naturally occurring compound found in nature commonly used in agriculture. Chlorine is a disinfectant commonly used in potable water distribution systems. At the treatment-levels proposed, potash will not harm other aquatic species.)

The California red-legged frog, listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act, are present in a pond located at the base of the dam that receives seepage water. During the period of reservoir draw down, treatment, and refilling, the seepage water will be replaced by an alternate supply of untreated water.

Representatives from Reclamation, SBCWD, and DFG, will be available to provide information and answer questions during the meeting.
