Join Otto Otter and Reclamation's safety expert Steve Marquez as they talk to parents and children about the dangers of playing in and around irrigation canals in the latest monthly installment of the Great Plains Regional Podcast.

"Cool water is cool. But playing, swimming, or running around canals and ditches in your neighborhood is not," said Otto Otter. "Cool off at a local pool, lake, or swimming area where adults can watch you, and remember never swim alone and always have a buddy."

Irrigation water, whether passing through the open countryside or through the middle of town, can be hazardous to children. Major canals, medium-sized ditches, and small laterals all pose a safety risk during irrigation season from April through October, particularly to young children.

Statistics show drowning accidents are the second most common cause of death for children under the age of 14 in the United States.

Reclamation encourages parents to discuss canal safety with their children. Remember a few simple rules: Never play near canals or climb fences near canals. Never swim in canals, walk or play on bridges and gates near canals, or fish in canals. Don't allow younger children to play near canals, walk, or ride bikes on canal banks. It is important children understand that canals are very dangerous.
