Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: April 22, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation has recently awarded National Electric Coil, Incorporated, a $14.9 million contract to replace the armature windings and stator cores of the two generators at the Judge Francis Carr Powerplant located on Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County, California. The contract includes removing and disposing of the existing components, and furnishing, installing, and testing of the new components. Disassembly and reassembly of the rotating machinery will be accomplished by Reclamations Northern California Area Office.

The replacement program will be undertaken during a 2-year period with the first unit scheduled to be disassembled starting in September 2009. During each unit outage, the turbine runner and wicket gates will also be replaced and the generator refurbished.

A feature of the Trinity River Division of the Central Valley Project (CVP), the powerplant was originally placed in service in 1963 and currently generates a total of 154 megawatts. The existing generator windings have been in service since about 1983. The encompassing generator and turbine runner replacement project is a key element in ensuring the critical hydropower production of CVP. Both the generator rewinds and the turbine runner replacement are funded by CVP power customers.

For more information about this project, please contact Mr. Steven Melavic, Chief, Facilities Operations Branch, Central Valley Operation Office, at 916-979-3008 or e-mail smelavic@mp.usbr.gov.
