Reclamation Makes Decision on Truckee River Riparian Ecosystem Restoration

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: April 20, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation has signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzing the impacts of stream bank restoration on the Truckee River for a 0.7-mile reach below Derby Dam. The project will improve the riparian ecosystem conditions along this reach of the river with the treatment of noxious weeds and planting native vegetation that would shade the river and improve fish and wildlife habitat.

Reclamation and the cities of Reno and Sparks, Nevada, are implementing the riparian ecosystem restoration project under a Reclamation Desert Terminal Lakes (DTL) Program grant. This project is part of a larger series of restoration projects on the river, funded by Reclamations DTL Program, that collectively include the permanent transfer of 250 acre-feet of water from Reno and Sparks to the lower Truckee River and Pyramid Lake.

The EA and FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. They are available online at: http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=2681.
