Draft EA/FONSI Available for the Transfer of Central Valley Project Water from Firebaugh Canal Water District to San Luis Water District and/or Westlands Water District

Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: March 31, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public comment a Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the approval of the 2009 transfer of 4,400 acre-feet of Central Valley Project (CVP) water from Firebaugh Canal Water District (FCWD), a San Joaquin River Exchange Contractor, to San Luis Water District (SLWD) and/or Westlands Water District (WWD).  The transfer is intended to allow expeditious water deliveries to assist in offsetting the effects of the lack of 2009 CVP deliveries by increasing the volume of water available to SLWD and/or WWD.

The FCWD would deliver the water from this transfer to landowners with property in both FCWD and SLWD and/or WWD, therefore supplying water to their own multi-water district landowners.  This CVP water is needed immediately by SLWD and/or WWD to meet in-district irrigation demands.

The Draft EA and FONSI were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available for public review and comment.  The documents are available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=3603.  If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail ibr2mprpao@mp.usbr.gov.

Written comments must be received by close of business Friday, April 10, 2009, and should be sent to Ms. Judi Tapia, Bureau of Reclamation, 1243 N Street, Fresno, CA 93721.  Comments may also be faxed to Ms. Tapia at 559-487-5397 or e-mailed to jtapia@mp.usbr.gov
