Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: March 27, 2009

The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review and comment an Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzing the impacts of Reclamation's action to provide Federal funding to The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for acquisition costs of land around Independence Lake, located near Truckee, California.  In addition to acquisition costs, funding would also be provided for project management and fishery research and monitoring.

Public Law 110-161 directs Reclamation to provide $9 million in funding for acquisition of the land and protection of both the native fishery and the water quality of Independence Lake.  TNC plans to continue existing fisheries research and monitoring in the Independence Lake area.  TNC is also exploring potential land management ideas for future implementation, including possible forest management to minimize wildfire hazards and public recreation management.  Reclamation has no statutory authority over TNC's future management of the land.

The EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and may be viewed at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=3492.  If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail ibr2mprpao@mp.usbr.gov.

Please send written comments on the EA to Mrs. Caryn Huntt DeCarlo, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza Street, Room 320, Carson City, NV 89701-4015, by close of business Monday, April 27, 2009.  Comments may also be faxed to Mrs. Huntt DeCarlo at 775-882-7592 or e-mailed to chunttdecarlo@mp.usbr.gov.  For additional information or to request a copy of the EA, please contact Mrs. Huntt DeCarlo at 775-884-8352.
