The Bureau of Reclamation initiated drilling this week on a well in Eunice, New Mexico to help deal with water shortages in the community due to the ongoing drought. The well, to be located about five miles west of Hobbs in southeastern New Mexico, will supplement existing wells in the area and allow the city to meet current and future water needs.

This well is being drilled under the authority of the Reclamation States Emergency Drought Relief Act of 1991, which authorizes Reclamation to provide assistance to states, tribes, municipalities, and some nonprofit organizations impacted by drought conditions to minimize losses and damages. This assistance includes well drilling, temporary water distribution, contingency planning, water banking, and conservation.

Funds for the Eunice well and eleven other wells in New Mexico and Arizona came through the Supplemental Appropriations Act signed on May 27, 2007. Construction will soon begin on wells in Carlsbad and Hagerman, New Mexico.

"These communities have been seriously affected by the drought," said Bureau of Reclamation Albuquerque Area Manager, John Poland. "These wells are vital to keep the water flowing to residents."

The completed well in Eunice will be 16 inches in diameter and is expected to be approximately 220 feet deep. The estimated cost for the project is approximately $216,000.
